A Jadavpur University (JU) panel has recommended that the answer scripts of the journalism and mass communication department’s semester and internal examinations be re-evaluated by external experts, following protests by students over alleged evaluation flaws.
The decision to recommend re-evaluation was taken at a meeting of JU’s board of examination on Friday.
Parthasarathi Chakrabarti, the head of the department and a member of the examination board, said: “The examination board is of the view that the answer scripts of the semester examination and internal examination of the students from the 2023-25 batch will be re-evaluated by external experts....”
The final decision, he said, would be taken by the executive council, which is the highest decision-making body of the university. “We have referred the matter to the executive council,” he said.
On November 25, students of the department locked the door of a room shared by a former head of the department, Santwan Chattopadhyay, and an assistant professor, Abhishek Das, alleging lapses in the evaluation of answer scripts.
The protesting students alleged that papers of the first- and second-semester exams were allegedly not evaluated while awarding marks.
The university has showcaused Chattopadhyay and Das.
A section of students is boycotting classes as a mark of protest.
A JU official said the review of the scripts by external experts will reveal the truth.
