The Indian Medical Association (Headquarters) on Wednesday said it has suspended the membership of Sandip Ghosh, who resigned as principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after a junior doctor was raped and killed, for “his conduct” in dealing with the victim’s parents.

The disciplinary committee of the largest doctors’ body in India, constituted by national president R.V. Asokan, wrote to Ghosh on Wednesday informing him about the suspension. The letter was signed by Anilkumar J. Nayak, honorary secretary general, IMA.

“The disciplinary committee… today suo motu considered the rape and murder of a postgraduate resident and the subsequent developments in RG Kar Medical College. The undersigned along with the National President had also visited the parents of the victim in their home. They had put up their grievances against you in dealing with the situation as well as lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in appropriate manner befitting the responsibility held by you in your dealings with them,” the letter reads.

“The disciplinary committee of IMA HQs has unanimously decided to suspend you forthwith from the membership of Indian Medical Association.”

Ghosh was unavailable for comment. His phone could not be reached on Wednesday.

The IMA Bengal branch and some other associations of doctors, too, had demanded action against Ghosh “citing the nature of disrepute” brought by him to the medical profession.

“The investigating agencies and the courts are dealing with the issue. We will wait for the outcome,” said Asokan.

Ghosh has been questioned by the CBI several times since the central agency took over the investigation into the August 9 rape and murder.

Sources said that apart from the rape and murder, he is also being questioned about alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar over the past few years.

Ghosh has been sent on long leave by the state health department following an order by Calcutta High Court.
