Cops detain BJP leaders as thousands marched towards health department headquarter in Calcutta

BJP's protest march to Swastha Bhawan on Thursday erupted into violent clashes with police. The demonstration, demanding justice for the RG Kar rape & murder victim earlier this month, began as peaceful protest march but soon deteriorated. 

The rally witnessed a rare show of unity in the BJP state leadership. Top leaders of the BJP, Suvendu Adhukari, Sukanta Majumdar and Dilip Ghosh were in the rally. But the situation escalated soon enough leading to a clash between BJP supporters and cops.

BJP supporters rallied at Hudco crossing, and started a 5 km march to 'Swasthya Bhawan', the state health department headquarters in Salt Lake. State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari spearheaded the protest.

Police officers sought to calm the situation, but as tensions escalated, they resorted to lathicharge to disperse the agitated crowd.

 In a dramatic turn of events, police detained Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari and pushed him into a prison van. This action sparked immediate outrage, with BJP activists attempting to forcibly free their leader.

Throughout the march, impassioned BJP workers raised slogans like "We want justice" and "Mamata Banerjee, resign".

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh leveled serious accusations against the state government and RG Kar Hospital authorities, claiming attempts were made to destroy crucial evidence related to the doctor's death. He emphasized the BJP's commitment to uncovering "the truth".
