The high court on Thursday declined to grant anticipatory bail to a retired IPS officer who is apprehending arrest for allegedly denigrating a section of women while speaking on the rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Pankaj Datta, a familiar face in debates on Bengali news channels, is known for his aggressive posturing against the state’s government and the ruling party. He had made the allegedly derogatory comments at a convention at Presidency University last month.

“The remark of the former IPS officer is unethical. So, the court is not interfering in the issue,” Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj said while rejecting the anticipatory bail on Thursday.

The mass convention at Presidency University had speakers from different walks of life. Many spoke on the RG Kar incident, its aftermath and the way forward.

The Trinamool Congress criticised Datta for his comments. Later, a case was registered against him at Burtolla police station. The complainant sought criminal proceedings against him.
