A video has surfaced where an “additional security” guard at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital can be heard alluding to chief minister Mamata Banerjee when senior officials asked him about his designation and the work he did.

The incident is from last year and the short video clip went viral recently.

An official at RG Kar identified the man as Afsar Khan. He was summoned following complaints that he had been frequently staying away from work and was not wearing the uniform meant for guards, said an official of the hospital who can be seen in the video.

Manas Kumar Bandyopadhyay, who was appointed the principal of RG Kar on August 21, was the principal of the medical college at that time, too.

Sources at the hospital said Bandyopadhyay was the principal of RG Kar for less than a month last year. He replaced Sandip Ghosh, who was brought back to RG Kar within a month and Bandyopadhyay was shifted out.

Ghosh resigned days after a young doctor was raped and killed at RG Kar on August 9.

In the video, Bandyopadhyay is heard asking Khan what his designation is and what work he does. Khan says he is an “additional security”.

Bandyopadhyay then asks Khan how many such additional security persons are there. Khan does not answer this question and instead replies: “Didi has sent me”.

“You speak to Didi. How many people are here, who sent me,” Khan goes on.

Bandyopadhyay is heard interrupting Khan and asking him: “How many people are there?”

“I don’t know. I do not see such things. You call Didi. Does anyone has Didi’s number?” Khan is heard saying in the video.

“Who is Didi?” asks Bandyopadhyay.

“CM. CM is Didi,” replies Khan.

The short clip ends at this point.

At the beginning of the clip, Bandypopadhyay and other officials are heard telling Khan to speak in a lower voice, while Khan says he only speaks in that voice.

Officials at the hospital said Khan, a resident of the Belgachhia bustee, was known for his proximity to local Trinamool Congress MLA Atin Ghosh and was appointed as an additional security guard at RG Kar on his recommendation.

Ghosh denied the allegations. “As MLA, I visit the Belgachhia bustee twice a week. There are hundreds who live there. I do not know this man personally,” Ghosh said on Tuesday.

Officials said all hospitals have additional security persons.

RG Kar officials said there were complaints that Khan was irregular in duty but no step was taken against him.
