A group of 12 men, who had booked a couple of bungalows inside Greentech City in Vedic Village, allegedly thrashed two residents and a security guard on Saturday night.
They were arrested early on Sunday on the basis of two separate complaints filed by the treasurer of the Greentech City’s Residents’ Association and the security guard, a senior officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate said.
The men had booked the two bungalows to host a party, the officer said.
Many bungalows and villas inside the Greentech City are listed on property portals on the internet and can be taken on rent to organise parties, Abdul Rasheed, the treasures of the residents’ association, told The Telegraph.
According to Rasheed, on Saturday night he received a distress call from the head of security who told him that a guard was being beaten up by a group of men.
“I immediately alerted one of my neighbours, Rajarshee Ray, and we went near gate number 5. We saw the guard getting beaten up. When we tried to intervene, one of the attackers brandished a knife, while another was holding a golf club and the third was holding a gun,” said Rasheed.
According to him, the men kept beating him, Ray and the security guard Jadab Ghosh.
Several residents came out of their houses after the trio raised the alarm.
Ghosh the security guard said that trouble broke out after a car reached the gate number 5 of the Vedic village and demanded entry.
“There were four occupants inside the car. Usually when someone rents the bungalows we get an email that has their names. I asked and checked their names and they were not on the list. When I told them that I could jot let them enter they started shouting and then called the other people who came to the gate from the bungalows that they had rented,” said Jadab.
A senior officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate said that they arrested all 12 men who were involved.
“They had booked two bungalows for a weekend party. They had called in additional guests when they were stopped from entering and this is where the trouble started,” said the officer.
In 2022, a woman had allegedly been gang-raped inside one of the bungalows at
a party.
