A section of flat owners of a housing complex in north Calcutta has moved the high court seeking a stop on this year’s Durga Puja at the Hatibagan Sarbojanin, alleging that the pandal has not left any space for movement of even emergency vehicles like ambulance and fire tenders.

The Puja stands on Khudiram Bose Road, a bylane off Aurobindo Sarani, near the Khanna cinema intersection.

The petition sought cancellation of the licences issued to the puja committee.

Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, who heard the plea on Thursday, asked the state to file an affidavit stating the basis on which the police and fire services departments gave their nods to the pandal which has allegedly encroached a bulk of the road.

The case will be heard again on Monday.

“Perhaps the puja committee has an increased budget. This year’s pandal is larger than last year. If the pandal is completed, the residents would be in great trouble. There will not be enough space for an ambulance and or fire tenders to make their way through,” the lawyer appearing for the petitioners told the court.

The lawyer sought an order, “cancelling the permissions given by the fire services department and the police”.

The lawyer appearing for the state claimed that “a good number of flat owners in the complex had already given their consent to build the pandal”.

At this, the petitioners’ lawyer said: “The Puja organisers are forcing the flat owners to give the consent”.

An organiser of the Hatibagan puja told Metro: “We have followed all the norms.”
