Leaders must trust their teams to deliver, the man at the helm of one of India’s leading power utilities said in a recent lecture in Calcutta.

“Invest in people development. Invest in the team. Most of the time, the team will deliver,” said Gurdeep Singh, chairperson and managing director of NTPC Limited.

Singh was the speaker at the Bengal Chamber of Commerce Leadership Lecture Series, in association with The Telegraph, on September 6.

“As you take up higher responsibilities, delegation and empowerment are the two words that will help you. It is necessary sometimes to get into micromanagement if there is some crisis. But most of the time, the team accomplishes your vision. From 2005, I have been the CEO of small, medium and big companies. But I never had to take any file back home, unlike in most government offices,” Singh said.

The BCC&I Sardar Jodh Singh Award for Igniting Minds was conferred upon Singh at the event.

The lecture series and the award were launched in March 2016 as flagship initiatives under the marketing and brand committee of the chamber. The series aims to feature visionaries and thought leaders who share their insights on topics aligned with their areas of expertise and interest.
