Lawyers of Calcutta High Court marched on Monday afternoon demanding justice and punishment for “the real culprits” who are involved in the rape and murder of the young doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Former advocates-general Anindya Mitra, Jayanta Mitra and Soumendra Nath Mookherjee walked in the rally, which started from the main gate of the high court during the lunch break.
Many advocates were carrying placards and banners with messages demanding justice for the victim.
“Punish the real culprits” read a poster held aloft by a woman lawyer. “Lokkhir bhandar aache lokkhir nirapotta nei (There is Lakshmir Bhandar but there is no safety for Lakshmi)” read another.
Members of various associations of lawyers practising at Calcutta High Court, including the Bar Library Club, Incorporate Law Society and the Calcutta High Court Bar Association, joined the march.
Senior counsel Jayanta Mitra said the rape and murder of the young doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 is “a crying shame for the entire Bengali community as well as Calcutta”.
“The incident has sparked an outrage worldwide. We are ashamed as a society in general,” said Mitra.
