A head-on collision between a car and an SUV on AJC Bose Road flyover early on Monday left seven persons, including several from an IT company, injured.
All of them were initially shifted to the SSKM Hospital and then to separate private hospitals at the insistence of their family members, police said.
Around 5.35 am, an SUV carrying a group of employees of an IT company was headed towards Park Circus along the flyover when a private car from the opposite direction came in front of it, resulting in a head-on collision.
The SUV was severely damaged. The right front wheel got tilted sideways and the windshield was reduced to pieces, police said.
“We are trying to find out how the car came in the way of the SUV. The flank on which the SUV was moving is meant for vehicles headed towards Park Circus and Bypass and no vehicle can come from the opposite side,” said an officer of the Karaya police station.
Police said among the injured were three women, aged between 21 and 22 years. They are residents of Behala, Ekbalpore and Maheshtala. The injured also included four men, two of them are from Maheshtala.
“The CCTV footage available with us till now shows the SUV moving down AJC Bose Road from the police training school before reaching the flyover. We are retrieving the footage from other points to find out how the car landed in front of the SUV,” a police officer said.
A section of police said the car possibly violated the traffic signal at the seven-point and took the ramp meant to bring vehicles from the AJC Bose Road flyover to the Park Circus Rotary.
Vehicles headed for CIT Road and Gariahat from the AJC Bose Road flyover used this ramp and the car isolated the traffic signal and landed on the flyover from the opposite end.
The front part of the “offending” car was completely smashed. The bonnet was twisted, the battery came off and a part of the windshield was damaged following the head-on collision.
The car’s clutch and brake fluid chambers were destroyed and the carriageway of the Park Circus-bound flank of the flyover was soaked in the fluid, police said.
The early-morning collision brought Park Circus and EM Bypass-bound traffic along the AJC Bose Road flyover to a halt till police reached the spot and removed the two vehicles after rescuing the injured.
“We have seized both the vehicles. The drivers have been identified and we will talk to them separately to find out how the collision occurred,” an officer said.
