Sandip Ghosh, who resigned from the post of principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital following protests over the rape and murder of a junior doctor, got involved in controversies earlier, too.
Ghosh, an orthopaedic surgeon, was the medical superintendent and vice-principal of the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH) for four years before being transferred to RG Kar as principal in 2021.
Doctors’ associations alleged that Ghosh was involved in corruption and was shielded by some in the state government.
Twice last year, Ghosh was transferred from RG Kar to the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. The first order was issued on May 31 but was revoked by the health department in 48 hours.
The second order, issued on September 11, was also revoked within a month, said health department sources.
“There are multiple allegations of corruption against him (when he was principal of RG Kar). These include manipulation of tender processes and selling biomedical waste in the open market. PILs were also filed in those matters. The then assistant superintendent of the hospital spoke against the irregularities,” said Manas Gomta, former general secretary of the Association of Health Service Doctors, a forum of doctors working in government hospitals.
Ghosh did not answer calls from Metro on Tuesday evening. Multiple calls to him from this newspaper over the last few days went unanswered.
