An on-duty constable of Kolkata Police was attacked by a man with a glass bottle in the Sovabazar area early on Wednesday morning. The incident left him injured in an ear.
Police said during the early morning patrol duty, an allegedly intoxicated person whom cops identified as Rahul Das, 37, engaged in an altercation with constables Debasish Mondal and Uday Barman.
“According to the two constables who were on the motorcycle patrol duty, the
man was creating a public nuisance on the road. When he was asked to step aside and leave the thoroughfare, he started arguing with them,” said an officer of Burtolla police station.
The altercation turned violent when the man hit Debasish Mondal with a glass bottle near Durga Charan Mitra Street around 5.30am.
Mondal suffered from an injury on his left ear and started bleeding on the spot.
He was rushed to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital while Das, who allegedly assaulted the constable, was arrested from the spot.
Officers of the Burtolla police station said that the man has been booked under sections of deterring a public servant from performing duty and assaulting an on-duty police officer.
