Clash between two groups over a parking dispute breaks out, civic volunteer, cops hurt

Bricks pelted, glass bottles thrown and crude bombs hurled

A clash between two groups over a parking dispute broke out at Narkeldanga on Friday night, resulting in the pelting of bricks and crude bombs.

A civic volunteer attached to Maniktala police station was injured after shots were fired. More than one police personnel were injured in the stone pelting.

An altercation between two individuals over parking a bike snowballed into a fight between two groups prompting police to deploy a huge contingent on the spot.

Bricks were pelted, glass bottles were thrown and crude bombs were hurled.

Sources said multiple rounds of bullets were fired. One of them grazed past a civic volunteer attached to Maniktala police station.

A senior police officer said the civic volunteer was present to provide logistic support to the officers who went to contain the situation.

"Several rounds were fired. One of the shots grazed a civic volunteer. The injuries are not critical," said an officer present at the spot on Friday night and Saturday morning.

The accused had been identified, the police said. It was not clear if he had been arrested till Saturday night.

A few other police officers were also injured because of the brickbatting.

A political party posted about the Narkeldanga incident projecting it as an attack on a Kali Puja procession.

Kolkata Police issued a rejoinder on social media and said it was a "fake narrative".

"An attempt has been made on social media to create a fake narrative about the incident at Narkeldanga. No Kali Puja immersion procession was attacked. The issue was related to parking of a bike which led to a fight between two individuals and further escalated," Kolkata Police posted on their social media handle.

"However, the police intervened timely and brought the situation under control.

The scheduled Kali Puja immersion procession was completed peacefully and without any hindrance," the post read.

Senior police officers of the rank of deputy commissoner, joint commissioner and additional commissioner had to go to the spot.

Early on Saturday morning, Kolkata Police commissoner Manoj Verma also visited the spot.

A huge contingent of police has been deployed at the spot to prevent any recurrence of the incident and to maintain peace and law and order in the area.

A search has been launched to arrest all the people who were involved in the violence at Narkeldanga on Friday night.
