A civic volunteer of Kolkata Police has alleged that she was molested by a sub-inspector inside Park Street police station early on October 5.

The woman said in her complaint that a programme was organised on the night of October 4 to distribute new garments among staff members of the police station. Sources said such events are held across police stations ahead of the festive season.

The civic volunteer, who has been posted at Park Street police station since 2017, wrote in her complaint that the sub-inspector called her to a room on the third floor of the police station around 1.10am.

The officer handed her a set of new clothes and then touched her inappropriately, the woman said in her complaint.

“The civic volunteer mentioned in her complaint that she ran down to the ground floor and informed the officer on duty about the incident. She said she wanted to lodge a formal complaint. The officer allegedly refused to record her complaint and advised her to settle the matter with the accused,” said a senior officer of the city police.

The woman then called up her uncle to inform him about the incident. His phone was reportedly switched off. She then called up her aunt’s friend and narrated the incident, police sources said.

The civic volunteer then wrote a complaint and sent it to the commissioner of Kolkata Police, the detective chief and the deputy commissioner in charge of the south division of the city police.

Based on the woman’s complaint, an investigation has been initiated and the accused officer “closed”, the senior officer said. An officer who has been “closed” is not assigned any duty till the order is withdrawn.

“Statements of all those who were at the police station on the night of October 4 and early on October 5 are being recorded and CCTV footage is being scanned,” the officer said.

“We are taking whatever actions need to be taken,” Murlidhar Sharma, additional commissioner of Kolkata Police, told The Telegraph on Sunday.

Sources said an FIR has been registered at Park Street police station based on the civic volunteer’s complaint and a departmental inquiry started against the accused officer.

“We are trying to find out whether the accused was drunk that night,” an officer said. “The complainant’s statement will be recorded.”
