Chancellor and founder of IEM-UEM Group, Satyajit Chakrabarti, dies at 77

Chakrabarti also served as a member of the West Bengal Higher Education Council from 1997 to 2006

The chancellor and founder of IEM-UEM Group, Satyajit Chakrabarti, passed away at a city hospital on Thursday. He was 77.

Born on July 12, 1947, in Calcutta, Chakrabarti earned his BTech in mechanical engineering from the Regional Engineering College (now NIT), Durgapur, followed by an MTech from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

“His quest for knowledge led him to obtain a PhD in mechanical engineering from Burdwan University and an MBA from Missouri University,” said a release issued by the group.

Chakrabarti’s career spanned both industry and academia.

He founded the IEM-UEM (Institute of Engineering and Management-University of Engineering and Management) Group in 1989,” the release said.

“He was a true leader who led others grow around him. He would invite and embrace new ideas and give opportunities to new leadership, that created a new generation of leaders,” said his son and pro vice-chancellor, IEM-UEM Group, Satyajit Chakrabarti.

“Under his leadership, the group set standards in technical education, fostering innovation and excellence across institutions. As chancellor he was instrumental in instilling human values and discipline among students, striving to create an environment that combined Indian ethos with contemporary western educational techniques,” said the release.

Chakrabarti also served as a member of the West Bengal Higher Education Council from 1997 to 2006. Starting his career at the Steel Authority of India, Chakrabarti held the position of vice-president at British America Investors Corporation at the World Trade Centre in the US from 1984 to 1994.
