The CBI on Sunday questioned three officials in the accounts department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and an external vendor who was allegedly involved in illegal collection of parking fees for two-wheelers on the hospital campus.

CBI officers said they were trying to find out whether proper procedures were followed while engaging the external vendor to collect parking fees.

There are allegations that Sandip Ghosh, who resigned as principal of RG Kar days after a junior doctor was found raped and murdered at the hospital on August 9, ran a racket of collecting parking fees for two-wheelers in the hospital compound bypassing the parking rules of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Sources in the CBI said they have received the names of three vendors whom Ghosh had allegedly awarded several government tenders related to parking, canteen management and cafeteria, without following government rules.

Ghosh did not respond to text messages from this newspaper seeking his reaction to the allegations against him.

The vendor as well as the three officials in the accounts department of RG Kar were questioned at the CBI office in Nizam Palace.

The officials were questioned about documents related to income and expenditure of the hospital.

“We need to check whether there is any reflection in the books of the income from two-wheelers. Everything is being looked into,” said an officer in the central agency.

Sanjoy Vashishth, a former medical superintendent and vice-principal of RG Kar, was also questioned at Nizam Palace for several hours.

Thousands of people from across the state visit the government medical college in north Calcutta. Many of them commute on two-wheelers and often park their vehicles in the hospital compound.

CBI sources said the revenue generated from two-wheelers should run into lakhs of rupees every month.

The CBI is also probing allegations of granting of RG Kar projects to vendors without following proper procedures, engaging third parties for electrical and civil work without involving the PWD, setting up of a gym in the hospital compound and purchase of office furniture with Covid funds, and illegal sale of hazardous biomedical waste.

Another CBI team quizzed Anup Dutta, an assistant sub-inspector of Kolkata Police, at the agency’s office in the CGO Complex on Sunday.

Officers said the lone accused in the rape and murder case — Sanjay Roy — had contacted Dutta on August 9 morning.
