Twenty-four cars that run on CNG produced from cow dung left Eco Park in New Town on Monday morning for an interstate journey that will culminate in Delhi on November 26.
The participants will drive through Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, travelling around 2,000km. In the capital, they will be joined by other participants who started from Himmatnagar in Gujarat, Pune and Jammu.
Dairy brand Amul is organising the rallies to spread awareness about clean fuel and sustainability. The rallies will crisscross India in the run-up to November 26, the birth anniversaryof Verghese Kurien,celebrated as the National Milk Day.
The rallies, held in association with Maruti Suzuki and Bajaj Auto, aim to raise awareness of the circular economy while honouring the legacy of India’s dairy cooperatives.
Circular economy “aims to minimise waste and promote a sustainable use of natural resources,” says the website of the United Nations Development Programme.
Manoranjan Pani, the chief general manager of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), told the gathering before the flag-off ceremony: “Amul has always been committed to empowering farmers and promoting sustainable practices. This rally will honour Dr Kurien’s legacy and serve as a reminder of the potential of cooperatives in building a sustainablefuture for India.”
On November 26, the rallies will converge at the National Milk Day celebrations organised by the Union ministry of animal husbandry and dairying.
“This coincides with the event organised by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) to officially declare the year 2025 as International Year of Cooperatives,” the organisers said.
