A son of a Trinamool Congress councillor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) was arrested early on Wednesday for allegedly knocking down a 70-year-old woman on Southern Avenue while driving his mayoral council member mother’s car.

Suddhasatwa Banerjee, the younger son of Mitali Banerjee, the councillor of Ward 99 and the mayoral council member in charge of social welfare schemes, was driving the white Maruti Suzuki Brezza that hit the woman on the Tollygunge-bound flank of Southern Avenue near Lake Kali Temple, police sources said. His elder brother was in the car, too.

There were many blood stains on the car.

Tara Saha, 65, the injured woman, was taken to Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan (Shishumangal hospital) and from there to SSKM Hospital, the councillor told reporters.

“My sons took her to Shishumangal and from there to SSKM Hospital. I also told them to get an MRI done,” she said.

An official at SSKM said: “She fractured her left arm and left leg. The patient is in the orthopaedics ward and is stable.”

An officer at Rabindra Sarobar police station said they were scanning CCTV footage to find out how the accident happened. “The car hit the woman, a pedestrian, around 6.45am near a spot opposite Lake Kali Temple,” the officer said.

“The car was moving towards Tollygunge from Golpark and it is yet to be determined how it hit the pedestrian on the right side of the flank, close to the fenced divider. We are scanning CCTV footage to get a clear idea,” he said.

Southern Avenue has fenced boulevards separating the flanks with openings in between for cars to switch flanks. Following the accident, a traffic sergeant on morning duty asked Suddhasatwa to stop when the two brothers stepped out, said a police officer.

The woman, with blood oozing down her arms and struggling to stand, was lifted into the car and the traffic sergeant directed the brothers to take her to Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan on Sarat Bose Road, the police said.

The doctors at the hospital administered her first aid and then referred her to SSKM Hospital.

The police said Tara is a resident of Jodhpur Garden, near Lake Gardens. The police alerted her relatives immediately after the accident.

The police seized the councillor’s car and arrested Suddhasatwa for rash and negligent driving.

“He was booked under Sections 281, 125B and 324 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” a police officer said. “Since these are bailable charges, Suddhasatwa was released on bail,” added the officer.

Section 281 deals with rash driving in a public way, 125B with acts endangering personal safety or lives of others and 324 refers to an intention to cause wrongful loss or damage.

“My two sons were with the woman and her family members at SSKM,” Mitali told reporters.
