The board of residence of Calcutta University inspected Carmichael Hostel on Monday to probe a complaint of “unauthorised” residents staying there.
The board of residence manages the university’s halls and hostels.
The vice-chancellor had asked the board of residence to inspect the hostel after the complaints surfaced.
Recently, a resident of the central Calcutta hostel wrote to the VC complaining about the unauthorised residents, who allegedly threatened the complainant because he protested against their stay.
The complainant said that though the hostel was earmarked for undergraduate and postgraduate students, PhD students stayed there.
The VC has asked the board of residents to submit a report.
In July, a second-year differently abled student of the hostel wrote to the UGC’s anti-ragging helpline alleging that a former student, who had continued to stay in the hostel, had assaulted him. The university then announced several measures to curb the entry of outsiders into its hostels.
A CU official said the latest complaint suggests the instructions were not implemented.
“I have received two complaints. One is about PhD students staying in the Carmaicahel Hostel. The other is about the formation of a mess committee allegedly in an unfair way,” CU vice-chancellor Santa Datta said.
In July, a notice was issued instructing the hostel superintendents to track down those staying in the hostels despite having graduated and ask them to leave.
“There are allegations that the hostel superintendent is not cooperating in identifying those staying in the hostel illegally,” said a CU official.
The superintendent had been issued a show-cause notice for dereliction of duty in September in the wake of the complaint of assault on a differently abled student.
VC Datta told Metro on Monday that she had sought an opinion from the university’s legal adviser on what action could be taken against the hostel superintendent.
