The woman’s body found stuffed in a gunny bag in a canal in Regent Park last Tuesday has been identified as that of a 17-year-old from the southern fringes of the city, police said on Wednesday.
A senior police officer said as the victim was a minor, her name and identity were being withheld.
The police said they were in touch with her family members who had lodged a murder complaint. A probe was started based on that.
Investigators said they were looking for a young man with whom the girl was said to be close.
No one had been arrested till late on Wednesday night.
Last week, the preliminary post-mortem report revealed that the girl had been stuffed inside a gunny bag while she was still alive.
She died by drowning after the bag was disposed of in a canal.
“Water and mud from the canal were found in her system suggesting that she had tried to inhale but drowned as she could not come out of the stitched gunny bag,” said an officer who is part of the probe.
Police sources said CCTV footage has been found where more than one person was seen carrying a gunny bag resembling the one in which the teen’s body was found.
“The post-mortem revealed that the girl had multiple injection marks on her. It could be that she had been injected with something that made her unconscious before her body was disposed of,” said a senior police officer.
