Bay system triggers heavy-rain alert

Calcutta is likely to get heavy rain on Friday, according to the forecast

A cyclonic circulation over Myanmar is likely to move towards Bangladesh and cause heavy rainfall in south Bengal between Thursday and Saturday, the Met office said.

Calcutta is likely to get heavy rain on Friday, according to the forecast.

“A cyclonic circulation lies over central parts of Myanmar, extending up to mid-tropospheric levels. It is likely to move west-northwest and reach coastal Bangladesh and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal over the next two days,” said a Met bulletin issued on Wednesday.

“Due to the system, heavy rainfall activity is very likely in some districts of south Bengal from September 12 to 14,” it added.

The bulletin predicted;

  • Heavy rainfall (7-11cm) is very likely in North and South 24-Parganas districts and thunderstorms with lightning are likely in East Burdwan, Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum and Hooghly onThursday.
  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20cm) is very likely in North and South 24-Parganas, Hooghly and East Burdwan and heavy rainfall is very likely in Calcutta, Howrah, Nadia, Bankura, East and West Midnapore, Birbhum, West Burdwan and Murshidabad on Friday.
  • Heavy rainfall is very likely in Purulia, West Burdwan, Bankura, Jhargram andBirbhum districts onSaturday.

The Met office has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea on Friday and
Saturday.

“Squally weather with surface wind speed reaching 35-45kmph gusting to 55kmph very likely along and off West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts and North Bay of Bengal on Friday and Saturday. The sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough. Fishermen
are advised not to venture into sea along and off West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts and North Bay of Bengal on these two days,” said a Met Official.
