The Baguiati police issued a summons to Samaresh Chakraborty, the councillor of Ward 9 of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, in connection with the alleged attack on and extortion of money from promoter Kishor Halder.

The police pasted the notice on the door of his house on Tuesday, asking him to appear in Baguiati police station within 24 hours.

On Sunday, Halder was allegedly beaten up and hit with the butt of a pistol by a large group of men, allegedly led by Chakraborty.

The group attacked the promoter near a construction site in Baguiati.

According to the police, the promoter has alleged that Chakraborty had demanded 50 lakh as “protection money”.

Halder told this newspaper that he had already paid Chakraborty 23 lakh in two installments.

“Despite the payment, he (Chakraborty) and his men kept threatening and harassing me before assaulting me on Sunday. My family members are living in fear as the police are yet to arrest him,” Halder said.

Police teams visited Chakraborty’s house on Monday night and Tuesday morning and found it locked on both occasions.

An officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate said Chakraborty’s phone has remained switched off since Sunday. It went off radar soon after the promoter filed the complaint.

“Relatives nearby said they did not know Chakraborty’s whereabouts. His neighbours too denied having any knowledge of his location,” said Chakraborty.

The police have activated their source network to track down Chakraborty.

On Tuesday, The Telegraph called Chakraborty several times but his phone was switched off.

The mayor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, Krishna Chakraborty, said she was aware of the attack and the complaint.

“I know a complaint has been lodged against Chakraborty. Let the police investigate and find out the truth. If he is guilty, the law will take its course and the party will also take action against him,” said Chakraborty.
