Actor Samrat Mukherjee was arrested after his car hit a motorcyclist at a high speed and then rammed into the wall of a house on Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani, off Behala Chowrasta, around 1.20am on Tuesday, police said.
Mukherjee, who police said was driving a Mahindra Thar, has been arrested on the charge of rash and negligent driving. He has been remanded in police custody till Friday.
“The actor was driving recklessly. The biker suffered multiple injuries. The statement of the motorcyclist will be recorded shortly,” said an officer at Behala police station.
The motorcyclist, Saurav Halder, was returning home to Behala’s Sakherbazar after closing his ice cream shop in Tollygunge when the accident occurred.
Eyewitnesses alerted the police about the crash. The police took Halder to MR Bangur Hospital and later shifted him to the trauma care unit of SSKM Hospital.
“I was returning home. The car suddenly came in front of me near Muchipara More and I couldn’t move away. I fell and passed out,” Halder said from his hospital bed.
The police said Mukherjee was at the wheel and was headed towards Karunamoyee in Tollygunge from Behala when he hit the biker. There was another person in the car.
“Eyewitnesses said the car was moving at a high speed through the near-empty Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani in a direction opposite to that of the motorcyclist. The vehicle knocked off the motorcyclist, swerved a bit and rammed into the boundary wall of a house, damaging it completely,” an officer said.
“We have collected CCTV footage of the accident.”
