A 31-year-old businessman from Belur in Howrah has remained untraceable for almost a month with his family and the police clueless about his whereabouts.

Tanuj Agarwal, a resident of Girish Ghosh Road in Belur, left his house to visit a warehouse barely 700 metres away around 8.30am on August 14.

Shortly after that Tanuj called up his mother and said he would be returning home for breakfast. He did not.

“Tanuj said he was reaching in 15 minutes and for the next six hours when he didn’t return, a missing complaint was lodged with the Belur police station,” said Anshul Goel, one of Tanuj’s cousin brothers.

Based on the missing complaint, police started a search.

“The next day his two-wheeler was found on the road leading to the Dakshineswar Kali temple from Bally bridge,” Goel said.

Over the next few days, police tried finding out if there were any reports of drowning from the ghats adjoining Dakshineswar temple on the morning of August 14.

CCTV footage revealed he drove down to the spot near the temple. The family then filed an FIR alleging kidnap.

“The family did not get ransom calls which leaves us to believe that Tanuj’s disappearance may not be a case of abduction,” said an officer of Belur police station.

“We have alerted adjoining police stations about the disappearance and CCTV footage has been scanned. Some of our officers are pursuing the case to find credible leads.”
