He was shot in the head from close range and declared dead on arrival at Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital, the police said. The bike-borne assailants fled.

Kaji Rafikul Islam, 28, a resident of Haroa in North 24-Parganas and a trader involved in the business of supplying construction material, has been arrested.

“Islam was arrested after teams from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate raided several locations near Haroa,” a senior officer of the commissionerate said.

“Islam used to be Khan’s business partner of sorts. Lately, the two fought over sharing the profits and their respective areas of operation,” the officer said.

Manav Singla, deputy commissioner, New Town, Bidhannagar commissionerate, said Islam has been arrested for murder.

“Preliminary investigations have led us to believe that Khan’s murder followed a fight over profits of the business. We are trying to track down and arrest everyone involved in the case,” said Singla.

Another officer of the commissionerate said Islam might have hired contract killers to shoot Khan.

The area behind Eco Park gets deserted after sundown. “The area gets deserted after dusk. Many people are spotted drinking in the open or in fields at night," said Samaresh Das, a New Town resident who runs a restaurant not far from the area.
