Two junior doctors who were on the night shift with the postgraduate trainee who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 deposed before the Sealdah court on the second day of the trial on Tuesday.

The two are among the four junior doctors who had dinner with the woman on the night of August 8, hours before she was found dead in a seminar hall on the third floor of the Emergency building of the government medical college.

On the night of the incident, four junior doctors and the victim had dinner and watched the Paris Olympics on the phone together.

After that, one of the two who deposed on Tuesday settled inside the “sleep (study) room” and the other went downstairs to the Emergency room, the CBI has mentioned in the chargesheet.

The first, who settled inside the “sleep” room, was reportedly the second person to have seen the doctor’s body on August 9, CBI sources said. His fingerprints
were said to have been found at the crime scene, the sources said.

Both witnesses were examined and cross-examined by the prosecution and
defence lawyers.

The lone accused who has been chargesheeted in the rape and murder case — Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer attached to Kolkata Police who has since been suspended — was brought to the Sealdah court for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

According to the rule, the accused has the right to hear the depositions made by the witnesses, unless the trial judge issues an order denying him or her the right.

The accused will get a chance to be heard through his lawyer at the end of the depositions. Roy is being represented by advocate Kabita Sarkar.

Additional vehicles were included in the convoy that transported Roy from the Presidency jail to the Sealdah court to boost his security.

The trial, being held in camera, will continue on Wednesday. Two more doctors named as witnesses by the prosecution could depose on Wednesday.

Usually, it takes months or even years for the trial of a criminal case to start. However, this case has been fast-tracked and the trial began around three months after the young doctor was raped and murdered.
