The ninth day of the trial for the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital concluded at the Sealdah court on Friday with the deposition of three persons, including two cops.

One of the three was a guard from a security agency posted at RG Kar who is said to have identified Sanjay Roy, the lone accused chargesheeted so far, as having entered the hospital on the night of August 8, CBI sources said.

The young doctor was raped and killed in a seminar hall on the third floor of the Emergency building of the hospital early on August 9.

A Kolkata Police constable who marked the crime scene was one of the cops who deposed during the day. The other was a policeman who had gone to the barracks of the fourth battalion and brought Roy to Tala police station on the night of August 9.

Roy, then a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested a few hours later on August 10.

Although it takes months, if not years, for a trial to commence, the RG Kar case was fast-tracked and the trial started within three months from the day the victim was raped and murdered.

The trial is likely to resume on Monday and continue through the next week on consecutive days.

More than 10 people have deposed in the case. The victim’s father and a former councillor who accompanied the family to the crematorium and allegedly played a role in the “early cremation” of the doctor’s body, were the first to depose in the case.

Roy, who is lodged at Presidency jail, is being tried for rape, murder and causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state.

If convicted, he can be sentenced to death.

The central agency took over the probe of the case within four days of the rape and murder, acting on an order of Calcutta High Court. By then Kolkata Police had arrested Roy.
