Heaps of garbage were allegedly dumped outside the gates of a housing complex in Beleghata on Thursday by waste collectors of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Reason: To avenge the perception that many residents of the apartment voted against Trinamool Congress in the Lok Sabha elections.

A video of waste collectors dumping heaps of garbage outside a housing complex was circulating on WhatsApp on Saturday.

Sachin Singh, the councillor of Ward 36 where the housing complex is located, admitted that the waste had been dumped but denied involvement anyone from Trinamool.

“We have won by a huge margin from this ward. Why would we do this? I have friends in that apartment,” Singh said on Saturday evening.

“I went there on Thursday evening immediately after I got to know about the incident. I ensured that the waste was picked up on Friday morning.”

When asked about the incident on Saturday, mayor Firhad Hakim said he condemned such acts. “Everyone has the right to vote according to their choice. This is wrong. Will dumping waste make them vote for us?” he said.

On Friday, CCTV footage showed motorcycle-borne men hurling something towards the gate of a highrise building in Bhowanipore early on Thursday.

The footage shows three men arriving on a bike in front the building on Chakraberia Road in Bhowanipore. Two of them had their faces covered while the third jumped off the bike and started taking out something that resembled bottles from a white bag.

Many living in the neighbourhood alleged that they suspected it was the handiwork of local Trinamool supporters.
