A murder accused out on bail was arrested on Tuesday in connection with threats to people in Kasba to part with their property for redevelopment, police said on Wednesday.
Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu was picked up in south Calcutta on various charges, including criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.
He had been arrested in February 2017 on the charge of murdering a businessman in Kasba.
On December 1, a businessman was attacked by a group of men suspected to have been engaged by Sona Pappu, the police said.
A bullet grazed the hand of Pradip Bhakt on GS Bose Road in Kasba when the group opened fire, apparently to threaten residents who have been resisting attempts to take over a plot in the locality.
The plot is close to the premises of a club whose members and some residents have been thwarting attempts to grab it.
In September, residents had petitioned Kasba police station for a picket to prevent a possible clash over attempts to take over the plot. A picket was posted but it was withdrawn last month.
“During investigation we found that Sona Pappu had sent Santosh Sharma and Naata to threaten some of the club members before December 1. The duo had turned up with arms. Santosh was arrested soon thereafter,” an officer of Kasba police station said.
“The arrest created a rift among members and some refused to pay heed to Sona Pappu. That helped us reach Sona Pappu,” the officer said.
Kasba, which has of late seen a real estate boom, has had several instances of violence in recent times, the officer said.
