A contractor and supplier of construction materials who is affiliated to the Trinamul Congress has alleged that he was attacked by another contractor, also a supporter of the ruling party, over payment of old dues.
Police suspect the dispute between two factions of the ruling party is over spoils from the profits they made in the construction business.
Complainant Goutam Sardar has alleged that he was attacked by a group of men in the Narkel Bagan area on Friday evening.
In his complaint with Kasba police station, he has blamed another contractor and supplier of construction materials, Rabin Dey, for the attack.
“Dey owes me over Rs 2 lakh, which he is not repaying,” Sardar said.
Sardar, who suffered multiple injuries, was taken to MR Bangur Hospital for treatment, the police said.
Dey, when contacted, refuted the charges and claimed he was at Champahati in South 24-Parganas on Friday evening when Sardar was allegedly attacked. He said he could submit evidence, including a video recorded at his friend’s son’s birthday at Champahati — where he apparently was on Friday evening.
Dey claimed that he was to return the money on Sunday and that there was “no question of attacking Sardar two days prior to the date of payment”.
Officers of Kasba police station said they had received a complaint and were collecting CCTV footage from the area where Sardar was allegedly attacked.
Sardar and Dey used to work in the construction business jointly and are affiliated to the ruling party. They parted ways a few months ago, an officer said.
“The dispute could be over a fight on the spoils from the construction business. We are probing the allegations.”
