Shankar Mohan Das arrived home dead from work.

His body reached his Kankurgachhi home in a coffin on Tuesday.

The family of Shubhojit Mali were waiting for the arrival of his remains till late on Tuesday.

Das and Mali died in the train crash while they were returning home in the Sealdah-bound Kanchenjunga Express.

Das, 62, was a retired railway employee who was working on extension. Mali, 33, used to drive and deliver cars.

Calcutta mayor Firhad Hakim went to Das’s home on Tuesday afternoon to pay his tributes.

“Mayor came. He said it was the fault of the railways that an incident like this happened. He said the family was free to seek any help they needed and that the administration was there to help them at every step,” said Das’s cousin Kushal Das.

Das is survived by his 85-year-old mother, wife and two sons. He was cremated at Nimtala Ghat on Tuesday evening.

Mali’s 11-year-old daughter Srishti should have been celebrating her birthday with her father on Tuesday. Instead, she was among those waiting for his lifeless body to arrive.

Relatives of Mali said rain in north Bengal delayed the transportation of the body. “We are expecting the body to reach home on Wednesday morning,” said Mali’s cousin Dolly.

The family said they had booked an ambulance from Calcutta. The body will be brought home in it.

Mali’s brother Surajit and cousin Ajay went to bring him back.

Mali is survived by his elderly parents, wife Mithu, daughter Srishti and one-and-a-half-year-old son Subham.

“Srishti lost her father on her birthday. Monday was her birthday. It is pathetic,” Dolly said.
