The Kalimpong civic administration has said the construction of a multi-level car parking arena here is almost complete and the facility will be inaugurated in a few months.
“As of now, construction of the ramps is in progress. It will end in a couple of months and we have plans to open the space in September. The parking area will accommodate around 200 four-wheelers and an equal number of two-wheelers,” Ravi Pradhan, the chairman of the board of administrators (BoA) at the Kalimpong municipality, said.
The parking lot, sources said, is coming up in the Ninth Mile area of Kalimpong town. It was taken up in 2013 with a project cost of ₹17 crore but remained unfinished for years because of encroachment. Till 2018, only the ground floor of the proposed three-storied structure had been built.
This made the civic body and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) intervene. They took the task of providing houses to eight families who were staying at the proposed site.
The civic body has also identified some other spots in different locations of the town where new parking lots can be developed for smooth traffic in the town.
In Kalimpong, vehicles are parked on the roadside. As a result, four-wheelers move at a snail’s pace, particularly during rush hours.
