Darjeeling: Kalimpong police have arrested a resident of Assam who created from Arunachal Pradesh a fake Facebook account of a Kalimpong resident to harass girls.

Police said Amit Ray, 28, a resident of Sakomura village of Assam's Bongaigaon district, created a fake Facebook account of Kalimpong resident James Dendi Molomu.

“The actual accused behind the fake James Dendi Molomu Facebook account that has been harassing people from Kalimpong and Sikkim since July has been arrested from Arunachal Pradesh by Kalimpong cyber police station team,” said Aparajita Rai, the SP of Kalimpong.

Ray was arrested from remote Sangram village in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday.

Sources said the Kalimpong police had recently received a complaint from the district legal cell authority.

A victim, who had filed a complaint on August 14 with Kalimpong police, stated the fake Facebook account used photographs of girls from the region with obscene messages.

"Police traced James Dendi Molomu to his home at Lolay in Kalimpong. However, we found out another person created a fake Facebook identity using James’s details. We got in touch with Facebook and matched details after which our team left for Arunachal Pradesh on August 18,” said a police official.

Ray's phone has been seized. The police claimed Ray has confessed.

“We hope that with this arrest people get the message that they can be tracked if they commit online crimes,” said the victim.
