Kala Bhavana — the department of fine arts at Visva-Bharati — has organised a monthlong exhibition on the life and works of its “Seven Pillars” as part of its centenary celebrations from Sunday.

The exhibition on Rabindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Benode Behari Mukherjee, Ramkinkar Baij, |K.G. Subramanyan, Somnath Hore and Sarbari Roy Chowdhury has been named “Pillars of an Artscape” or Shilpabhumir Stambha in Bengali.

Kala Bhavana was set up in 1919 by Tagore.

Apart from life and works in photos of its “Seven Pillars”, the admission documents of its illustrious students from the first batch have been displayed at the Nandan Art Gallery of Kala Bhavana as an additional attraction for visitors.

K.S. Radhakrishnan, artist and alumnus of Kala Bhavana, is the curator of the exhibition. He was mentored by Baij and Chowdhury.

“Every construction stands on its pillars. For Kala Bhavana, these seven persons are the pillars. So, we came up with the idea of paying respects and presenting their works and life through archived photographs in this exhibition,” said Radhakrishnan.

The exhibition has been put up in all three rooms and corridors on the ground floor of Nandan Art Gallery, mostly with black and white photos.

Sanjoy Mallik, the |principal of Kala Bhavana, said: “The exhibition will |be on for a month. It will |give a message to the |visitors as well as students about our pillars on whom the glory of Kala Bhavana stands.”

“There is list of the first batch students of Kala Bhavana where the name of Benode Behari Mukherjee is written with a pen. We have displayed it. There is another interesting document on the admission of K.G. Subramanyan. That has also been displayed,” a Kala Bhavana teacher said.
