One person was injured and two houses were damaged as elephants went on a rampage at different places in north Bengal on Tuesday.

A tusker that had strayed out of the Bagdogra forest went berserk on Sanyasithan tea estate in the Siliguri subdivision. The elephant damaged the hut of forest worker Pradip Toppo and devoured the food grains stored there. Sensing the danger, Toppo’s family members had fled the house to a safer place.

The staff of the Bagdogra forest range arrived and sent the tusker back to the wild by bursting crackers.

A 70-year-old suffered injuries when a wild elephant attacked him in Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri district.

Sources said the elephant had sneaked into Khayerbari and pulled down a hut. The animal lifted Samsul Haque, who was going to his farm, with the trunk and tossed him on the ground. He was hospitalised.

Two of them managed to escape but the elephant lifted Haque with the trunk and tossed him on the ground.

The injured Haque was taken to the local rural hospital. Later, he was shifted to the super-specialty hospital in Jalpaiguri where he is still under treatment.

In Cooch Behar district, two gaurs strayed into villages in Mathabhanga subdivision in the morning.

The residents ofKhokobari spotted one animal and soon, another gaur was sighted at the nearby Nalangibari.

As the villagers gathered to get a glimpse of the bison, a resident was attacked by one of the bison. He is under treatment at a rural hospital in Nishiganj.

Police and foresters reached the spot. One of the gaurs was tranquilised and it was later released in Patlakhawa forest.

“The other animal is still at large and the foresters are monitoring its movement,” said a source.
