Surgeons at Rampurhat district hospital in Birbhum took out over 1.6kg of ornaments, 60 coins and a wristwatch from the stomach of a 21-year-old mentally unstable woman on Wednesday afternoon.
Ayurneha Khatun, a resident of Margram’s Anantapur village, had been brought to the hospital 10 days ago with severe pain in her abdomen. X-rays and scans revealed a large deposit of metals in her stomach.
A team of doctors led by surgeon Siddhartha Biswas operated on Ayurneha on Wednesday. Some of the ornaments are of gold and silver, while most are imitations. The ornaments include earrings, bangles, chains and bracelets.
Doctors said Ayurneha seemed to be suffering from “delusional disorder”, which made her think the ornaments were edible. Her brother owns a jewellery shop, from where she is suspected to have taken the ornaments.
