Jalpaiguri forest division arrests Jomen Oraon, suspected poacher with a deer horn and bows and arrows

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Jalpaiguri forest division arrested Jomen Oraon, a suspected poacher, on Wednesday night and recovered a deer horn and bows and arrows from his home.

Vikas V., the divisional forest officer, said Oraon was a resident of Budhram forest village near the Gorumara National Park.

"We suspect that Oraon is a poacher. A case has been registered against him under the Wildlife (Protection) Act,” the forest officer said.

On Thursday, Oraon was produced at a local court in Jalpaiguri.

The court heard the case and sent him to 14 days in judicial custody.

Blaze

An under-construction homestay at Hopaldhara, some 7km from the hill town of Mirik, was gutted in a blaze early on Thursday.

Three fire tenders from Mirik rushed to the spot and doused the flames. Officials of the fire services department suspect the fire was caused due to an electrical short circuit.

Around 1am, some local residents spotted the blaze and rushed to douse it. In due course, the fire engines also arrived. It took almost an hour to douse the fire.

Body found

Shakuntala Roy, 30, a resident of Banahat in Jalpaiguri district, was found dead on Thursday in Morghat forest of the Paschim Duramari area. She was missing from home since Wednesday.

Some local residents spotted her body on Thursday morning and informed police.

Police suspect Roy was murdered, going by injury marks on her head, hand, and shoulder.
