A vehicle of former labour minister Jakir Hossain’s convoy was involved in an accident in Murshidabad’s Raghunathganj on Tuesday afternoon but Jakir, who is the Trinamul’s Jangipur MLA, escaped unhurt.
A security vehicle, part Jakir’s convoy going from his rice mill in Talai to Jangipur reportedly collided with a mini-truck bound for Farakka on NH12 near Talai More and was damaged. Eyewitnesses said the mini truck appeared to be speeding, swerved off Jakir’s car and hit the security van, injuring three policemen.
Later, Jakir told the media he was becoming involved in accidents “too frequently”. The MLA reportedly enjoys the same level of security as when he was a minister owing to an incident in February 2021, when bombs exploded at Nimtita station. Jakir, then labour minister, was waiting for a Calcutta train and had been severely injured.
“I will formally request the chief minister to probe why so many accidents are seemingly occurring around me.... My own life was saved barely by a whisker,” he said.
Jangipur police sources said an inquiry was on. The mini-truck was seized and its driver arrested.
“Both vehicles were wrecked in the crash,” said an eyewitness.
