Jadavpur University has issued a notice announcing that the boarders (students) will have to vacate hostels “within seven days from the date of completion of final examination”.
The notice was issued following a resolution adopted at the executive council meeting on May 24.
Signed by the dean of students now, it says: “As per EC (Executive Council), the boardership of students in the hostels shall be terminated within seven days from the date of completion of final examination.”
“In case of research scholars, the boardership shall be terminated within one month from the date of termination of fellowship/submission of thesis.”
It emerged after the death of a first-year undergraduate student last year following alleged ragging in the Jadavpur University main hostel that many former students were staying in the hostel.
Police arrested Sourav Chowdhury, a former student of the university, because he was the alleged “mastermind” of the incident that led to the death of the 17-year-old student on August 10.
The notice says final-year outgoing boarders are directed to vacate the hostel following the rules.
“Superintendents (of hostels) are requested to see that all the outgoing boarders must vacate the hostels as soon as the boardership is terminated covering the above-stated rules. A brief report concerning the non-compliance of the rules by the students must be reported to the undersigned (the dean) immediately for the administrative measures,” the notice adds.
