Jadavpur University intends to issue show-cause notices to the students and former students who have been “implicated” in a probe into alleged ragging that led to the death of a first-year student last year, officials said.

“The executive council will meet on July 5. Once the resolutions adopted at the previous meeting, on May 24, are confirmed, we will start issuing show-cause notices,” registrar Snehamanju Basu said.

“It is necessary to issue show-cause notices to those against whom the anti-ragging committee has made recommendations. They should get a chance to defend themselves,” a JU official said.

Senior students allegedly threw the 17-year-old first-year student from the second-floor balcony of the main hostel on August 9 last year. He died early on August 10.

The report of the anti-ragging committee, which this newspaper has gone through, says five residents of the main hostel have been identified to have been present on the second floor of Block A/2 of the main hostel during the “mishap”.

“They may be rusticated for four semesters and expelled from JU hostels permanently,” the report says.

The committee has recommended that 25 hostel residents be rusticated for one semester and expelled from hostels permanently as they were “directly associated with abetment to ragging”.

A JU official said some of the students against whom the committee has made recommendations are behind bars.

Manojit Mandal, a member of the executive council, said the university must start issuing show-cause notices immediately after the council meeting.

Kazi Masum Akhtar, another member, said it is a matter of regret that the university took 11 months just to decide on issuing show-cause notices.
