Jadavpur University will conduct counselling on August 13 and 14 for the 200-odd engineering seats left vacant after three rounds of centralised online counselling conducted by the joint entrance examination board.

Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, one of the two pro-vice-chancellors, said 197 seats were still vacant. The university has 1,243 engineering seats across 16 disciplines.

The third round of centralised counselling ended on July 20. “The vacant seat count will cross 200 after the ongoing admission season ends on August 6. Details of the counselling schedule will be announced soon on the university’s website www.jadunivedu.in,” said Bhattacharya, who is also dean of the faculty council of engineering and technology.

A member of the council said the university had lost BTech aspirants to some of the newer IITs, such as the one set up in Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, and the NITs.

A JU official said a number of students selected in the three rounds of centralised counselling did not turn up for admission. Among them were quite a few from Bengal, who were eligible for admission under the domicile quota.

The university this year reserved 533 of its 594 BTech seats in the general category for students domiciled in Bengal.

“We were under the impression that with the domicile policy in force, all the students who were selected through centralised counselling would take admission. But that did not happen. This shows the domicile clause cannot help us retain the best students,” the official said.

“Students with lower ranks on the JEE merit list will be selected through decentralised counselling,” another official said.

Calcutta University will conduct the first phase of decentralised counselling on August 5 for the 50 seats in the four-year BTech programme that were left vacant after centralised counselling.

The university, which does not have any domicile quota, will have 237 seats.

A member of CU’s admissions committee said they would hold decentralised counselling twice and try to fill all the seats.
