Foresters seized a truck with an illegal consignment of Burmese teak hidden under stacks of old tyres from the outskirts of Siliguri on Saturday.

Sources said a team led by Sanjay Datta, the range officer of Belakoba forest range of Baikunthapur forest division, intercepted the truck on NH27 at Fulbari.

It appeared the vehicle was loaded with used tyres, but teak logs were hidden below.

“Timber loaded in Guwahati was on its way to Calcutta. The estimated price of the seized logs is around Rs 50 lakh,” said a forest official.

Bihar residents Bholaram and Jitendar Kumar were arrested in this connection.

Fake currency

In Malda, the special task force of state police recovered fake Indian currency notes of Rs 1.45 lakh on Saturday morning. Pramod Sahani and Sudheer Sahani were nabbed at Baliadanga More under Kaliachak police station around 4am with fake notes in denominations of Rs 500.
