IIT Kharagpur will review its mental health programmes, an official of the institute said a day after a third-year BTech student was found hanging on the campus.

IIT director V.K. Tewari, dean of students Bhargav Maitra and other officials held a meeting on Tuesday.

“We run an extensive range of counselling programmes to address the mental health issues of students. The institute has many counselling centres. But the death suggests that there are some gaps which we need to fill up,” said an IIT official.

The official said they would come up with fresh directives on the mental health programmes soon.

An official of the institute said Devika Pillai, the deceased student, visited counselling centres.

“We are going through all the records to ascertain what went wrong”, the official said.

Awaaz, IIT Kharagpur, the student media body, said in a Facebook post: “While the police are currently investigating the circumstances, this marks the second tragic incident within the past year, and it is disheartening for all of us.

“In these challenging times, we urge anyone experiencing distress to seek support from the available services.”
