Several areas of Taki and Hansnabad towns in the Basirhat subdivision of North 24-Parganas were inundated on Sunday and Monday because of a high tide that caused the Ichhamati river to overflow the earthen embankments.

The Hansnabad police station was marooned because of the ingress of water from the river. Similarly, several areas in the Minakha block of the district were inundated on Sunday afternoon because of a high tide on the Bidyadhari river.

Sources said the river had breached the 20ft-high earthen dyke and submerged vast areas of Aatpukur gram panchayat.

According to reports available till the evening, the saline water of the river has entered villages and damaged agricultural fields and fishing bheris.

Panchayat chief Manas Mahato said: “Irrigation department officials have begun the repair of the dyke but the work has become difficult as water is still flowing over.”
