The price of onion has swung from Rs 23-24 a kilo in December last year to Rs 140-150 a kilo this winter. Bengal requires around eight lakh tonnes of onions throughout the year and a bulk of it is sourced from Nashik in Maharashtra, while the rest comes from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Since Bengal’s produce meets a part of its demand, supply of onions depends largely on trucks reaching from Lasalgaon in Nashik.
The Telegraph tracks the fluctuation as fortunes kept swinging following the floods in Maharashtra and Karnataka earlier this year
