The subdivisional hospital at Islampur in North Dinajpur was ransacked early on Monday morning following the birth of a stillborn and later the death of the mother.

The woman’s relatives alleged that she had died as no doctor had attended to her after delivering the stillborn. The deceased, Rangila Begum, 26, was from Mohabbatpur in Islampur.

She had been admitted to the hospital on Sunday night.

Ektamuddin, her father-in-law, said: “We were making arrangements for last rites of the stillborn baby. Suddenly, we were informed by some paramedics that my daughter-in-law’s condition was deteriorating fast. We urged them to arrange for doctors and provide her with necessary treatment. Soon, we were told that she had expired. Not a single doctor came to attend her. She has died because of negligence,” he said.

Some relatives and neighbours of the deceased ransacked portions of the hospital.

Police arrived and dispersed the agitators.
