The heads of 21 departments of North Bengal Medical College & Hospital (NBMCH) have sent a letter to the director of medical education (DME), seeking the removal of NBMCH principal Indrajit Saha.

In the letter that was sent on Friday, it has been mentioned that during Saha’s tenure, a group of people, including some junior doctors, were involved in malpractices during examinations.

“Tabulation sheets were tampered and results were manipulated. That is why, we want his removal. Also, some exams, including MBBS and MS, are ahead and we believe that such exams should be conducted after he is removed. This will ensure that the exams are conducted transparently,” said the head of one of the departments who has put his signature in the letter.

In NBMCH, junior doctors and medical students had resorted to protests, alleging that a section of junior doctors had indulged in highhandedness and malpractices. The name of Avik Dey, a former postgraduate trainee of SSKM Hospital in Calcutta, whose name had figured in the RG Kar incident, was also mentioned by the protesters.

Such protests had made Sandip Sengupta, the dean of student affairs, and his deputy to resign. Also, an inquiry committee was formed, and based on its findings, steps were taken against seven doctors and five students.

“However, no steps were taken by the state health department against the principal. He cannot deny his responsibility. That is why, we have sent the letter to the DME today,” said a senior faculty member of NBMCH.

Saha however, denied to comment on the issue.
