A mob in a Hooghly village barged into the house of a minor girl and beat up her parents on the charge that they were involved in the murder of a 17-year-old student, who had been missing since November 14.

Angry villagers also clashed with police when they arrived at the house of the minor girl to bring the situation under control.

“A group of villagers, along with the boy’s family members, attacked the girl’s parents and the cops. Though the boy’s family is yet to lodge a murder complaint, we have already started a probe in the connection. Injured parents of the girl have been taken to the hospital,” said a cop.

Sources said the minor girl and boy were in a relationship that the girl’s family did not accept. Villagers claimed a few months back the girl’s father had threatened the boy with dire consequences. When the boy went missing on November 14, a day later the teenager’s mother lodged a complaint with police.

Since then the family members had been trying to trace the boy. On Monday they came to know about an unidentified body that had been kept in the police morgue at Chinsurah district hospital.

The police said that Bandel GRP had recovered the beheaded body from railway tracks near Mogra on November 15. After the family members identified the body at the morgue to be that of the 17-year-old boy, the situation turned violent.

Family members of the boy and a group of villagers attacked the girl’s home armed with bamboo sticks. They barged into the house and beat up her parents. “We know that the boy was in a relationship with the girl and her father repeatedly threatened to kill him if he found the duo together. It is obvious that the girl’s father had masterminded the murder of the boy,” said a local resident.

Police said the boy’s family was yet to lodge a formal complaint accusing anyone of murder, the cops had started a probe to explore all possible angles that led to the death of the student.
