Earlier this year, Mamata Mondal (21), the victim, got married to Prasenjit Mondal.

Dharma Mondal, her father, said they had an affair.

“We accepted it and arranged the marriage. Soon after, my son-in-law and her parents started demanding money from us. Since we could not comply with their demands, they even tortured my daughter. Today, we were told that she had committed suicide by hanging. But we strongly believe that she was murdered and hanged,” he said.

Later in the day, he filed a complaint with the police. The accused persons, police said, have fled the village. “We are in search of them,” said a police officer.

'Fake' doctor

Ratan Chandra Sarkar, a doctor who claimed to be an AIIMS alumnus and a neuro-physician and was practicing in Cooch Behar, was handed over to the police by locals on Tuesday.

Sarkar, they said, is a fake doctor and doesn’t have medical degrees, they alleged.

For the past six months, he was practicing in the Dharmatala area in ward number one of Cooch Behar town.

“The residents and some of his patients suspected that he didn’t have the necessary qualifications. They asked him to show his testimonials but he couldn’t furnish anything,” said Subharanshu Saha, the local councilor.

Today, the residents demonstrated in front of his chamber. Police were informed and a team from Kotwali police station reached the spot. They took away Sarkar and initiated a probe.

Sarkar, however, has claimed that he has all the necessary documents.

Cattle seized

A team from Boxirhat police station in Cooch Behar recovered seven cattle heads on Monday night and arrested two persons.

Sources said Saddam Ali and Dablu Mian, who run e-rickshaws, were carrying the cattle in their vehicles and moving towards Assam.

The police intercepted them in the Mastani Kalibari area of Tufanganj-II block. As the duo failed to produce any document to validate the transportation of the cattle, they were taken into custody.
