A home guard of the Jalpaiguri district police and his mother were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Maynaguri on Tuesday morning.
Police recovered the bodies and started a probe. Senior police officers said they were waiting for post-mortem reports.
Sources said Parimal Barman, 45, who was a home guard, left home on Monday on his bike for fishing. He didn’t return home.
On Tuesday morning, some local residents spotted his body near a swamp. They informed the police and a team from Maynaguri police station rushed to the spot.
As the news spread, the neighbours reached Parimal’s house in Debinagar, a locality in ward 12 of Maynaguri town, where they found his mother Sabita, 65, dead.
“She was leaning on a bed. We suspect both of them were murdered,” said Nirubala Roy, a neighbour.
They mentioned that Parimal’s body was found around 100 metres away from his home. The site is in the neighbouring municipal ward 14.
“The mother and son used to stay together. It is surprising that both of them died in such an unnatural manner. The police should find the truth,” said Kalyan Kumar Saha, the councillor of ward 13.
Police officers, who visited the spot, said Parimal’s body bore injury marks on his head and shoulder.
The police also brought a trained sniffer dog but could not make much headway till Tuesday evening.
Khandbahale Umesh Ganpat, the superintendent of police, also visited the spot.
“We are waiting for post-mortem reports to know the exact cause of their deaths. Our officers are also gathering information about the mother and the son from different sources,” Ganpat said.
